British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, following an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
